Ethyne is the first member of the homologues series of alkynes. The electronic configuration and structural formula of ethyne is shown here. note that ethyne has a triple bond between its two carbon atom. The sharing of three electrons between two carbon atoms forms triple Bond. The CH bond angle in ethyne is 180° in the ball and stick model . This is the apparatus for the laboratory preparation of ethyne. On a layer of sand few pieces of calcium carbide are taken in a conical flask. Water is added on the calcium carbide through thistle funnel drop wise. Calcium carbide reacts with water to form ethyne gas. Being insoluble in water the ethyne gas is collected over water. Ethyne burns in air with a sooty flame producing CO2 and water vapour and liberating heat. When bromine is added to ethyne its brown colour discharges rapidly due to formation of tetrabromoethyne. Ethyne decolourises the purple pink colour of potassium permanganate solution.
