All that we can see and feel is matter. Matter is all around us and is made up of very fundamental unit called atom. We have atomic no, atomic mass and Mass no to give the exact description of the atom of a particular element. let us now learn about the feature that defines the individuality of element. A single atom consists of a nucleus made from proton and neutron and an electron cloud orbits around the nucleus. In the atom of different elements the combination of these three particles vary.  Within any atom the number of proton is always fixed and is responsible for determining the type of element the atom is. The atomic no is no of protons located in the nucleus of an atom. Since an atom is neutral as whole, the positively charged proton are equal in no. the negatively charged electrons. The atomic no is most important in determining what an element is and how it behaves i.e. its properties. The mass no is the concentrated mass located in the nucleus of an atom. The mass no is the sum of protons and neutrons within the nucleus of an atom. All matter has some amount of mass even if it is very small. The mass of an atom is extremely small. Atomic mass of an element is the relative mass of an atom as compared with the mass of carbon atom taken as 12. One atom of carbon 12 has a mass of 12amu. In the periodic table the precise address of all element known to man is given. The atomic no is the whole number which is associated with each element. Atomic no is written as a subscript to the left of the symbol of element. Capital letter Z is used to represent Atomic number and capital letter A is used for Mass number.
