For the extraction of Iron from haematite. Blast furnace is a device used to reduce iron ore to iron. A modern blast furnace is shown here. It stands up to 90mt in height is computer controlled and equipped with environment control device. Introduction of charge. The charge is in introduced in the furnace through cup and cone arrangement. Simultaneously a hot blast of air is introduced in to the furnace through tuyeres. Coke present in the charge burns in hot air blast producing CO2 and more heat. CO2 rises up and reacts with incoming coke forming CO which reduces haematite to iron. Due to the heat limestone decomposes forming CaO and CO2. The CaO acts as a slug and combines with sand converting into calcium silicate, an easily fusible mass . This mass is called slag. The iron formed is collected at the bottom and the slag forms a layer on it. It protects molten iron from oxidation. The iron obtained in this process is called Pig Iron. It contains carbon as impurity.
